Is OpenAI Codex Fizzling out?
I love the team at OpenAI and all of OpenAI products and initiatives. But, sometimes I feel like I have a love/hate relationship with OpenAI codex specifically.
I’ll admit I was skeptical about the product for various reasons at first, but was still really happy and excited to hear it was coming. But since then, I’ve kind of noticed demand and interest around it has fallen since the launch. Also, its “hype” reached no where near the levels of GPT-3 at launch time … I also feel we are seeing no where near the same number of use cases for it like there were for GPT-3.
I wasn’t sure if this was just my imagination … this idea that interest for it may be fizzling out, but when I looked it up on Google Trends … the data, especially when compared to GPT-3, seems to show this as well:
Interest around GPT-3 has always been greater and remains higher to this day than OpenAI codex ever was.
Don’t take this the wrong way - OpenAI codex is still groundbreaking and represents cutting edge research and development. The individuals behind it are formidable and deserve serious recognition for their contributions. Believe me, I’d rather see codex succeed than what I think we’re observing now.
In today’s podcast, I try to understand why this fizzling out is the case and share ideas and feedback I have to help address how Codex could be improved at a product level:
