New Podcast Episode: Github Copilot Early Thoughts
Yesterday, I dropped a new podcast discussing Github Copilot. Since I have access to it now, I’ll be sharing my early thoughts on how I’m finding the product so far. I will also be talking about what I think it means for society and job security for programmers in the future.
It was so fascinating when OpenAI released this product, I had just wrapped up my existing article last month called GPT-3 - The End of the Socially Awkward Developer (?) where I was speculating on the future of programming because of emerging technologies like GPT-3.
It’s so funny to think about … reading the article in hindsight, I forgot to mention the most obvious thing - code may be written altogether by language models like GPT-3 anyways! It’s funny to think about, but sometimes you can get so focused on something in detail that you neglect to mention the most obvious contextual things as well. Regardless, through Github Copilot/OpenAI codex, we are starting to already see the implications of language models today on the everyday programmer and programming culture itself.
As an aside personal update, everywhere is all booked up, but I am looking to go camping this weekend. This way, I can enjoy the weather and actually get out of the house. I have been feeling burned out emotionally over the last week or so and a little bit confused about the overall direction in my life, I’m hoping some time spent in the wilderness will help me reflect and regain some control over things. Hopefully, I’ll have some photos to share next week.
2021 is halfway done. Wherever you are, I hope you're taking the time to not only enjoy the weather but reflect on the future too.
