OpenAI Reveals Actual GPT-3 Acceptance Criteria, New GPT Models, and Cuts Ties with AI Alignment Group

I recently came across two major press releases which were accidentally leaked from the OpenAI team. They were supposed to be official press announcements for July 2021. This makes sense to me because the team at OpenAI has recently been stepping up their engagement with the developer community over the last week or so. Before I could take a screenshot, make an actual print out (I know, I was desperate), or save the page in any way, it had been pulled from publication on the PR Newswire site.

I think sharing this information is in the best interest of the community, at the same time, OpenAI is not publicly traded, so I don’t believe there is any risk of sharing inside information about the activity of a private organization which had been accidentally leaked.

Below, I’m going to attempt to summarize the main ideas that I read in the press release from memory. Please bare with me. There’s a chance of disinformation, but I promise I’ll try my best here to recall what I had read.

OpenAI Severs Ties with Internet AI Alignment Group

This one was a really shocking announcement - but the main idea was that they had decided to completely stop researching into AI Alignment and sort of shut down that particular research group. Not because they didn’t care about safety (quite the opposite), but because they were starting to fear that AI Alignment / “The Control Problem” was becoming too much of a cult / religion for people who have too many degrees. Instead, they are just looking into more practical approaches by working with commercial/developer partners (and even insurance providers, which is an interesting idea). I think what I read is they are just taking a more “industrial” approach now instead of a cult fanatical one rooted in mesa optimization.

They Announced GPT-X, GPT-M, and GPT-C Models

They announced new versions or what they’re calling “siblings” of GPT-3. These versions have various literature specialities and are trained on a heavy amount of data for different domains. Parameter accounts were pretty significant too, I saw that some of these sibling models were as high as 2.87 trillion paramaters, which is crazy to think about.

GPT-X is in partnership with SpaceX and may actually be a multimodal model trained on ~9.67 PB of data. This incredible large collection is made up of raw astronomical data, raw physics data, text based content from books, the sum of all scientific research papers, any other videos about space, and of course, satellite + telescopic based imagery data.

GPT-M was trained on medical literature, research papers, and medical data. It was specifically spun up to aid in the research process for helping people who suffer daily from rheumatoid arthritis. Which I personally think is a tremendous cause.

GPT-C is something similar but for climate change, which OpenAI has also recently blogged about that they’re interested in exploring.

The potential of using AI to solve some of humanity’s most difficult problems is really exciting to me. And I was just blown away to read about these models being announced. I’m interested in working with researchers and experts on this one, maybe there’s some real-world applications or even discoveries to be made here using AI based tools.

Removal of the Term “Prompt Engineering”

They decided officially (maybe it was my piece1 and some of the online discussion) that they will stop calling GPT-3 based scripts “prompts” and definitively stop using the word “engineering” to describe a pretty user-friendly natural language writing process. I couldn’t remember what they decided to call it instead, but I believe it was named after one of the OpenAI founders. I think, from what I read, they said that a prompt will now be referred to as an Ilya.

I’m biased here, but I think it’s a great idea (minus the Ilya part). Have you ever tried explaining the phrase prompt engineering to people who are non-technical? This name may have some clever basis from where it came from (that only niche CS grad students would appreciate), but it is not something relatable to the rest of the world (or even accurate!).

The Actual GPT-3 Application Acceptance Criteria

I’ve spent weeks harping on getting OpenAI to share its acceptance criteria behind the GPT-3 beta application process 2. The leaked press release, shockingly, showed that the selection criteria had been entirely random afterall. There was no actual basis for selecting some people over others. What I found weird about this revelation was how much time they spent in the press release itself talking about the randomization algorthm they used in particular as opposed to … I don’t know … just coming up with some kind of selection criteria process and publishing it openly on their website. Not sure what to say about this one.

That’s all I can remember for now. I will update this post later if I remember anything from the leaks.
